Who Am I?

FAQs
Isn’t therapy only for people with severe mental health issues?
Therapy is for anyone looking to improve their mental and emotional well-being. You don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from it—it can help manage stress, relationship issues and personal growth.
What if the therapist or approach doesn’t suit me?
It’s okay if the therapist you meet doesn’t seem like the right fit. Therapy is a personal experience; finding someone you feel comfortable with is essential. You have the right to change therapists until you find the right one.
I’ve been managing on my own for a long time—why seek therapy now?
Managing is not the same as thriving. Even if you’ve learned to live with specific difficulties, they may still affect you. Therapy can help you experience less stress, greater self-awareness and more fulfilling relationships.
I’m afraid I’ll be pressured into taking medication.
Therapists cannot prescribe medication—only psychiatrists and medical doctors can. Most forms of therapy focus on non-medicated strategies for mental health management, and any decision involving medication is entirely your choice.
How do I know if I should seek help for my mental health?
If you experience persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, irritability, or a lack of interest in activities you once enjoyed, it may be time to seek help. Other signs include difficulty sleeping, appetite changes, and struggling with daily responsibilities. Seeking professional support can be beneficial.
Why is mental health just as important as physical health?
Mental health affects how we think, feel, and behave, impacting all areas of life—including relationships, work, and physical health. Studies show that poor mental health increases the risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, while good mental well-being enhances quality of life and resilience.
Does mental health concern Black communities?
The belief that Black individuals are not affected by mental health issues stems from a complex mix of cultural, historical, and societal factors. It’s essential to recognize that all humans face challenges and illnesses, and mental health interventions should be culturally adapted to meet diverse needs.
Can mental health disorders be cured, or do people just manage them?
Many mental health conditions can improve significantly with the right combination of therapy, lifestyle changes, medication (if needed), and social support. Some people recover fully, while others learn to manage their symptoms and lead fulfilling lives.
Will my therapist share my personal information with others in the community?
Strict confidentiality laws and ethical guidelines bind therapists. Even if they are part of your community, they cannot share your personal information without your consent.
What if my therapist knows someone in my family or social circle?
Ethical guidelines require therapists to handle dual relationships with care. If a potential conflict of interest exists, the therapist will address it professionally and, if necessary, refer the client to another therapist.
